dress for the day: camouflage crisis

welcome to wednesday, when we join together in a simple style sacrament:

dress for the day you want to have,
not the one that’s trying to have you.

today and every wednesday, i invite you to link arms, blogs, and instagrams in solidarity. here’s to setting the tone for the days we desire with the clothes we pull from the closet!

no sooner had i confessed my magic mirror trick to the internet at large, than i learned the price of my betrayal.

the sisterhood of the traveling my-pants-are-hideous descended upon me last week. i spent 3 nights in 3 different hotels in 3 different cities and woke 3 different mornings at 5am to pull myself together for busy work and travel days. at 2 of the 3 hotels, i was faced with dreadfully distorting mirrors i nearly yanked from the walls to place at more encouraging angles.

before causing damage to hotel property, i took a deep breath and preached my own sermon back to myself.

the mirrors actually came in quite handy.

“you are more than you see in this fun-house style glass,” i said to me, and i believed her.

i pulled classic pieces from my overpacked suitcase – things i could picture myself liking together in the past. i channeled standards and standbys and skipped the experiments. there’s no time for trendy in crisis mode.

soon enough, i saw a me i recognized blending right back into the self i knew how to love.

when i returned from my travels to dinner & a movie with the girls, i was still more comfortable in the classics.

a simple sweater, pencil skirt, and last year’s boots . . . my calla lily pednant, a talisman of peace.  i may have matched the foliage of fall, but i felt safe and completely myself.

and on a saturday night full of sushi and a capella comedy, when you need ample room for king-size raisinets in your purse and your waistband, comfort is most certainly key.

what pieces are in your standby style safe-zone?
how do you survive crises of confidence and malicious mirrors?

if you’re into buttons, feel free to grab this one, and link up a post or a photo that tells your story below. feel free to link up anytime during the week, and look for a new dress for the day story each wednesday. even if you don’t link up – join me throughout the week on twinstagram (twitter +instagram) by using this hashtag:

  1. I do the same thing. When the day is just not working out for me and I know I need to feel good for my own sanity… I end up wearing the good old classics. The pieces I know I feel good in. I’ve never actually put it into words though. Usually I will try a million things on before I actually come to that conclusion. Thank you for the advice! I need to remember it next time I’m in that mood. It will save me from trying on all kinds of things and just stick to the pieces I know I’m going to end up with anyway.

  2. I covet that calla lily necklace. You’re beautiful!!

  3. Yeah, I almost bought that skirt. And I’ve also done a tunnel-visioned walk through a hotel room trying to avoid their fun house mirrors. I’m glad you were able to find your even keel. :)
