of the weekies [19]

there’s so much to see on the internet.

here are some of my recent favorite finds – recipients of my “we can pickle that” edition

of the weekies

picture of the week:

burgerville

so i’ve been in portland for approximately 10 minutes, and already eaten this delicious something. i’ve got about a million places to eat and only 5 potential meal times to squeeze them all in, but y’all, i’m totally up for the challenge.

needless to say, i should have pre-awarded my weekies instead of staying up late planning my meals for the next 2 days, but HEY, you can’t win them all (unless winning them all includes eating voodoo doughnuts and more of these burgerville fries, because then, my friend, you CAN).

so this week is a little different.

last friday, my friend laura tweeted this . . .

personalstyleHH

. . . and we all picked our jaws back up off the floor together, like after beyonce finished her half-time show. yes just like that.

because she was on to something, laura i mean. well beyonce, too, but that’s beside the point. and then laura went on to elaborate like only laura can in this post.

and i want you to go read it and talk to her there, but i wanted to point it out here to recognize the struggle that i have every time i write a dress for the day story. i don’t want to just talk about the clothes or how to wear this or that, and i can feel super frivolous flirting with that look-at-me-style world. for me, and this is just for me, it’s about finding the PERSON in my/your personal style, and giving us all a place to talk about the story we’re carrying around on our backs, and how we can choose to influence the things we can control with intention and a bit of fun.

i love what laura says here:

We’re better as we are, not as carbon copies.

what do you think?

how do you use the wonders of the interwebs and all the trends you can’t pretend you haven’t seen to your advantage? how do we get out from under fashion as a uniform and have fun with what makes us unique?

it’s a tricky line,
i say from my chambray shirt & skinny jeans,
but i’d like to walk it with you.

and obviously i’m awarding hollywood housewife the first blogger of the week award. (and the crowd goes wild)

may your weekend be full of your favorite flavor milkshakes.
vanilla, right?

  1. Hmmm… interesting thought.

For me personally, style blogs and Pinterest have been helpful. My style is still the same as when I started reading them, but they have given me ideas about how to wear things I already have in different ways. I still have no desire to wear leopard print or wear a sweater with a giant animal on the front, but I appreciate seeing the way other people dress. I think it’s all about perspective. If you feel obligated to be stylish or having a spending problem, I think that Pinterst and style blogs could be a bad thing. I think you just have to already know what your personal style is and use those things as a tool to make it better!

I’m wearing my chambray, too! That probably isn’t contributing helpful input to your well presented discussion, but it does prove that sisters will always dress alike…even from far far away. I do get overwhelmed sometimes by the vastness of Pinterest and the constant beauty and inspiration I find on my favorite fashion/lifestyle blogs. It’s hard to keep the mind on the “inspiration track” and not veer over into the “comparison track.”

  3. I think this is one of the reasons I love Dress for the Day – because it’s not really about the clothes or any one sense of style, it’s about finding a way to give yourself a boost, to express yourself in a way that’s empowering in a very personal, not showy way. I don’t know if I’m making any sense. Anyway. That’s how I see it. I like pinterest but I use it mostly as a place to collect things I’ve found elsewhere that I love. I can’t stay there too long because it starts to feel so echo-chamber-y with everyone pinning and repinning the same things. But I feel like I’m riding a line, too, because while I feel like I have a strong sense of what kind of style is me, I also want to take a few more risks and not settle for safe. It’s one of the things that can give me that old Dress for the Day boost. :) Pinterest definitely helps me with that.

Good luck with eating ALL THE THINGS in Portland!

  4. Yay! So glad you linked up with our very first Falling For Friday!

I can see her statement being true if someone is unsure of their own style. I’ve been a die hard comfy and crazy style lady since the age of 6. My fave colors- red & black, fave cut of pants – high wasted and fave style of music – moody, for about as long as well. So I use Pinterest and Style blogs as inspiration to mix things up. Not so much to reinvent.

  5. Oh I so agree with you Abby… I like to look at Dress for the Day the same way. It isn’t about the clothes or the style… it is about being strong and happy in who you are. It is about being the best we can be and happy with that. Getting up and taking care of ourselves by getting dressed in things that make us feel good help us to make our days better. So whether we are getting inspiration or mimicking the outfits we find on Pinterest and fashion blogs… I say we do whatever is going to make us feel the best about ourselves, not our looks, but our overall selves and well being. For me that is using those fabulous tools as inspiration and a way to further discover myself and my personal style.

Oh and PS… thank you for linking up with our very first Falling for Friday!!! You are adorable and I love hearing what you have to say. You are a beautiful writer…
